What Is B.A.R.F. Raw Feeding (BARF)?
BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate B.A.R.F. Raw Food. The principle is simple: feed pets the diet their biology is designed for, not the diet that's convenient for manufacturers to produce.
A properly formulated B.A.R.F. raw diet typically includes:
- Muscle meat (60–70%) — the primary protein and amino acid source
- Raw meaty bones (10–15%) — calcium, phosphorus, and natural dental hygiene
- Secreting organs (10–15%) — liver, kidney, heart — dense in vitamins and minerals
- Supportive additions — probiotics, omega-3 sources, fermented foods for gut health
No grains. No fillers. No rendered by-products. No synthetic vitamin sprays cooked onto corn starch. Just real food — the same categories of food these animals have eaten for millions of years before kibble was invented in 1860.
The Problem With Kibble
Kibble is not inherently evil — but it has fundamental structural problems that no reformulation can fully fix:
1. High-heat processing destroys nutrition. Kibble is extruded at 150–200°C. This destroys heat-sensitive enzymes, degrades amino acids (especially taurine), and oxidises fats. Synthetic vitamins are then sprayed back on — a poor substitute for bioavailable nutrition from whole food.
2. High carbohydrate content. Most kibble is 30–60% carbohydrates — necessary to hold the pellet shape, not to feed your pet. Obligate carnivores like cats and ferrets have no biological need for carbohydrates whatsoever. For dogs, chronic high-carb diets drive inflammation, blood sugar dysregulation, and metabolic disease.
3. Ultra-low moisture. Kibble contains roughly 8–10% moisture. Wild prey is 70–80% water. Chronic dehydration via low-moisture diets is a major driver of kidney disease in cats — the #1 cause of feline mortality.
4. Ingredient quality varies wildly. "Chicken" on a kibble label can mean anything from breast meat to rendered feathers. "Meat meal" can be from 4-D animals (dead, dying, diseased, disabled). Regulation is loose and enforcement is rare.
What Actually Changes When You Switch to B.A.R.F. Raw
These are the most commonly reported changes — typically visible within 2–6 weeks:
🌟 Coat & Skin
The difference is visible. Raw-fed pets develop a coat sheen that no supplement can replicate — because it comes from bioavailable fatty acids in whole muscle meat and organ fat, not fish oil capsules added to a starch base. Skin conditions, hot spots, and chronic itching frequently resolve within a month.
💩 Digestion & Stool
Raw-fed stool is smaller, firmer, and nearly odourless. This is one of the most immediately noticeable changes. When food is fully digested and utilised, there's little waste. Many owners report their dog's stool volume drops by 60–70%. Chronic diarrhoea and loose stools often resolve entirely.
⚡ Energy
Without starch spikes and crashes, pets maintain steady clean energy. Many owners describe their older dog as "acting like a puppy again." This is especially pronounced in cats and ferrets who were previously lethargic on high-carb commercial diets.
🦷 Dental Health
Raw meaty bones mechanically clean teeth as pets chew — something no kibble can do. Many raw-fed dogs never require professional dental cleanings. This is significant: dental disease is the most common health problem in domestic pets, and dental procedures require anaesthesia that carries real risk.
🤧 Allergies & Inflammation
Most pet food allergies are actually sensitivities to grains, synthetic additives, or low-quality protein sources. Remove the cause, remove the reaction. Ear infections, paw licking, skin rashes, and chronic gastrointestinal upsets typically clear within 6–8 weeks on a clean B.A.R.F. raw diet.
🩺 Organ Health & Bloodwork

B.A.R.F. Raw Feeding by Species
🐕 Dogs
Dogs are facultative carnivores — they evolved alongside humans consuming a predominantly meat-based diet with occasional plant matter. They are not omnivores in the way humans are. Their digestive anatomy (short gut, high stomach acid, no salivary amylase) is carnivore architecture.

🐱 Cats
Cats are obligate carnivores. This is not a preference — it is a physiological fact. Cats cannot synthesise taurine, arachidonic acid, or vitamin A from plant sources. They must obtain these from animal tissue. A cat fed a grain-heavy diet is in a state of chronic nutritional deficit.

🦦 Ferrets
Ferrets are obligate carnivores with extremely fast digestive transit times (3–4 hours). They have no ability to digest plant matter at all. High-carb diets in ferrets are directly linked to insulinoma (pancreatic tumours), adrenal disease, and chronic GI issues — the three most common ferret diseases in North America, all driven by inappropriate commercial diets.

Is B.A.R.F. Raw Feeding Safe?
The bacteria concern is the most common objection — and the most misunderstood. Dogs, cats, and ferrets have short, highly acidic digestive tracts specifically designed to handle raw meat safely. Their stomach pH (1.0–2.0) creates an environment hostile to most pathogens. They also have short transit times that don't allow bacteria to proliferate the way they would in a human gut.
Raw feeding has been practised by millions of pet owners worldwide for decades. The risks are manageable with basic hygiene: handle B.A.R.F. raw pet food with the same care you'd use for your own raw chicken. Wash surfaces, bowls, and hands. Freeze fish before serving. Keep raw away from immunocompromised household members.
How to Transition
Cold turkey switching works for most healthy adult pets. For sensitive animals, a gradual transition over a few weeks is smoother — introducing B.A.R.F. raw alongside their current food and slowly increasing the proportion.
